This is one of several unauthorized printings of a letter Erasmus wrote in 1519 to Albert of Brandenburg, Archbishop of Mainz. Erasmus endorses many of Luther’s views in this letter. Some scholars have seen the unauthorized printing of this letter as an attempt to damage Erasmus in his arguments with Luther on the matter of free will.
